3-Channel Adjustable Spectrum LED Grow Light Series

Some grow light projects need exactly three spectral levers — no more, no fewer. Three independently controlled spectrum channels, each one a separate electrical output that can be raised, lowered or switched off without touching the other two, combined into a target SPD by ratio rather than by turning one global dimmer.

Three Independently Controlled Spectrum Channels

FY LIGHTING offers commercial grow light platforms that can be configured with two, three, or four independently controllable spectrum channels. In a three-channel system, CH1, CH2, and CH3 can be assigned according to the required SPD, and each channel can be dimmed independently to change its contribution to the final spectrum. Channel allocation, spectrum ratios, fixture power, length, control method, and other electrical or mechanical parameters can all be engineered around the project requirements.

How 3-Channel Spectrum Ratio Control Changes the Final SPD

This is the section that separates a three-channel fixture from a three-dimmer fixture. Three channels are not interesting because there are three of them. They are interesting because the relative output between the three channels determines the shape of the combined spectrum, not just its intensity.

Independent Channel Output Adjustment

Consider two settings on the same fixture:

Setting A

  • CH1 — 100%
  • CH2 — 50%
  • CH3 — 20%

Setting B

  • CH1 — 70%
  • CH2 — 100%
  • CH3 — 0%

Both settings are valid operating points on the same hardware. They are not the same spectrum at different brightness levels — they are two different spectra.

These percentages are control examples only and are not crop recipes or recommended growing settings. They exist to show how the three output values combine; the values your project uses are derived from your target SPD.

How 3-Channel Spectrum Ratio Control Changes the Final SPD
Ratio Control Rather Than Simple Brightness Control

Ratio Control Rather Than Simple Brightness Control

Here is the mechanism in one sentence: when you lower CH2 from 100% to 30%, you do not just reduce the fixture’s total output — you change the relationship between CH1, CH2 and CH3, and therefore you change the combined SPD.

A single-channel fixture with a dimmer can only move one thing: total output. Its spectrum is fixed, so dimming it produces the same SPD at a lower amplitude. A three-channel fixture gives you three independent amplitudes feeding three different spectra. Moving any one of them changes the mixture’s proportions:

  • Reducing CH2 shifts the balance toward whatever CH1 and CH3 carry
  • Raising CH3 introduces more power in CH3’s wavelength region and can create or deepen a peak there
  • Turning a channel fully off removes its contribution to the combined SPD entirely — not just attenuates it

Two different ratio settings can deliver similar total photon output while producing materially different spectra; conversely, the same ratio at different overall levels gives the same SPD shape at lower amplitude. That distinction — ratio and level, controlled separately — is what 3-channel spectrum ratio control actually means.

FY LIGHTING

How Three Independent Spectrum Channels Work

How Three Independent Spectrum Channels Work

FY LIGHTING’s 3-channel adjustable spectrum LED grow light series is designed for projects that require greater flexibility in spectrum configuration and control. Each fixture can be engineered with three independently controllable channels, allowing different wavelength bands, white light components, or custom LED mixtures to be assigned to CH1, CH2, and CH3 according to the target spectrum.

By adjusting the three channels independently, users can change the contribution of each spectral component and create different spectrum ratios for crop production, vertical farming, greenhouse cultivation, plant growth chambers, and research applications. The exact channel assignment does not have to follow a fixed red-blue-white combination and can be customized around the required SPD.

Across the series, FY LIGHTING can support different spectrum combinations, wattages, fixture lengths, mounting methods, control options, and project-specific configurations. This makes the 3-channel platform suitable for both commercial cultivation and research projects that need more control than a fixed-spectrum grow light can provide.

CH1 — Primary Spectrum Component

CH1 carries the main light output. In most three-channel architectures it delivers the bulk of the photosynthetic photon flux — a base PAR spectrum, a broad white-dominant spectrum, or the project’s primary waveband. CH1 is the channel that stays at a defined level while the other two move around it. It is the reference against which the other two channels are ratios, not an “extra”.

CH2 — Second Independent Spectrum Component

CH2 is a second spectral group with its own electrical output, used to increase, decrease or fully switch off a second component of the mixed spectrum. Because CH2 has a separate control path, changing it does not disturb CH1. This is where a three-channel fixture starts to differ from a two-channel fixture: the second adjustable component is not locked to anything else.

CH3 — Third Independent Spectrum Component

CH3 provides the third independently controllable spectral variable. Functionally it behaves the same way as CH2 — its own output, its own dimming, its own on/off state — but its presence is what gives the fixture three dimensions of ratio control instead of two. With three independently driven groups, the number of distinct combined SPDs the same hardware can produce grows sharply, because every combination of CH1, CH2 and CH3 output levels produces a different mixed spectrum.

One channel does not equal one wavelength

This is the single most important clarification on the page. A channel is a driven electrical group, not a wavelength. A single channel may contain:

  • a single narrow wavelength, such as 660 nm or 450 nm
  • a far-red emitter group at around 730 nm
  • a white or broad-spectrum emitter group
  • a custom mixture of several LED types spread across the PAR range

So a “three-channel” fixture is not automatically a red channel, a blue channel and a white channel — although it can be configured that way. It is three independently controlled output groups whose contents you specify. Equally, a fixture with four channels is not “one better” for every project; it is right when four variables need to move independently.

What makes a channel a channel is the separate drive and control path. If two spectral groups share one output, they are one channel no matter how many LED types are soldered onto the board.

Engineering note: In a multi-emitter LED system, the combined spectral power distribution is effectively the weighted sum of the individual emitter spectra scaled by drive level — adjusting one primary reshapes the aggregate SPD rather than simply scaling it. The U.S. Department of Energy’s CALiPER report on photometric testing of white-tunable LED luminaires (2018) documents this behaviour for tunable systems: the luminaire’s spectral metrics change as the individual LED primaries are adjusted, because those metrics are calculated from the resulting SPD.

Common CH1, CH2 and CH3 Spectrum Architectures

Common CH1, CH2 and CH3 Spectrum Architectures

The configurations below illustrate possible three-channel architectures rather than fixed FY LIGHTING crop recipes. Final channel allocation depends on the target SPD, the available LEDs, the fixture platform, the driver architecture and the project requirements. Treat them as allocation patterns, not as growing recommendations.

Red + Blue + White

  • CH1 — Red
  • CH2 — Blue
  • CH3 — White / broad spectrum

The classic three-variable structure, and the arrangement most people picture when they hear “three channel LED grow lights”. One narrow band on each of the first two channels, broad-spectrum on the third. Because the red and blue channels are on separate electrical outputs, the red-to-blue relationship can be changed without moving the white component at all.

Base Spectrum + Red + Far Red

  • CH1 — Base spectrum
  • CH2 — Red
  • CH3 — Far red

A base-output-plus-two-independent-boosts structure. CH1 delivers the working spectrum, CH2 adds a targeted red contribution and CH3 adds far red as a third variable. This pattern suits projects where the base spectrum is settled and two specific components need to be varied on their own terms — a common requirement when the third component is spectrally distant from the other two, as far red is.

White + Red + Far Red

  • CH1 — White / broad spectrum
  • CH2 — Red
  • CH3 — Far red

A white-dominant base with two narrow additions. Because the white channel already spans blue, green and red content, the two narrow channels are there to shift specific regions rather than to supply the spectrum’s foundation. Projects that need visually workable light in the space alongside their spectral targets tend to prefer a white-carrying channel for exactly this reason.

Narrow Band + Narrow Band + Broad Spectrum

  • CH1 — 660 nm
  • CH2 — 450 nm
  • CH3 — White spectrum

Three channels where two are single-wavelength groups and the third is broad. This is the most literal interpretation of a three-channel band architecture: two precise additions plus one wide component that gives the mixture breadth. The wavelengths shown are examples — 660 nm deep red and 450 nm deep blue are the conventional pair in horticultural LED fixtures, and appear alongside white and far-red emitters in typical designs, as described in the peer-reviewed LED efficacy review published in Nature Food (2020). Your project’s wavelengths come from your target SPD, not from a default list.

Fully Custom CH1 / CH2 / CH3

  • CH1 — wavelength or spectrum
  • CH2 — wavelength or spectrum
  • CH3 — wavelength or spectrum

The three channels do not have to be drawn from any fixed set of combinations. FY LIGHTING can assign each of CH1, CH2 and CH3 according to the target SPD, available emitter options and the constraints of the selected platform. If your project needs a channel split that does not appear above, that is a normal engineering conversation rather than a deviation from the product.

One pattern runs through all five architectures: one channel carries the primary contribution, and each remaining channel is a genuinely independent variable. If two of your three components would always move together, you do not have three variables — you have two, and a two-channel build would be the honest specification.

Before specifying any 3-channel spectrum grow light, it is worth confirming which of your spectral components truly need their own electrical output and which can share one. That single decision determines whether three channels is the right answer or an expensive one.

FY LIGHTING

Tell Us Your 3-Channel Spectrum Requirements

There are two ways projects arrive at FY LIGHTING, and both are valid. Some clients already know their channel configuration; others have a target spectrum and no channel plan. The intake handles both.

Option A — I Already Know My Channel Configuration

Send the channel specification directly:

  • CH1 — target wavelength or spectrum, and target output or ratio if known
  • CH2 — target wavelength or spectrum, and target output or ratio if known
  • CH3 — target wavelength or spectrum, and target output or ratio if known

If you have ratios rather than absolute values, that is enough. Ratio is the operating language of a three-channel fixture.

Option B — I Have a Target SPD or Spectrum Requirement

Send the outcome and let engineering propose the channel split:

  • target SPD
  • spectrum image or spectral data file
  • wavelength requirements
  • an existing fixture reference, if applicable
  • target PPFD
  • application
  • project requirement

FY LIGHTING engineers can recommend how the target spectrum should be allocated across CH1, CH2 and CH3 — including which components should share a channel and which need independent control. You do not need to solve the channel architecture before contacting us.

Additional Project Fields

Whatever path you take, these fields speed up the quotation:

  • required fixture type
  • wattage
  • fixture length
  • quantity
  • input voltage
  • mounting method
  • control method
  • driver preference
  • project notes

Build My 3-Channel Configuration — Send your CH1, CH2 and CH3 requirements, or your target SPD, together with wattage, control and installation details. FAQ About 3-Channel Adjustable Spectrum Grow Lights

What is a 3-channel adjustable spectrum LED grow light?

It is a grow light whose output is divided into three independently controlled electrical and spectral groups. Each channel can contain a narrow wavelength, a white or broad spectrum, or a custom LED mixture, and adjusting CH1, CH2 and CH3 changes each component’s contribution to the final combined SPD.

Can all three spectrum channels be dimmed independently?

The purpose of a three-channel build is to provide independent output control on CH1, CH2 and CH3. The exact dimming behaviour depends on the driver and control architecture selected for the project, which is why channel-level dimming is confirmed during engineering against the fixture configuration rather than assumed.

How are CH1, CH2 and CH3 assigned?

Channel roles are assigned against the target SPD, the required wavelengths, the required broad-spectrum content, the fixture’s total power, the available LED selection and the project requirements. There is no fixed wavelength assigned to CH1 by definition — assignment is an engineering decision made per project.

Does each channel have to use only one wavelength?

No. A channel can contain a single narrow wavelength, or it can be built from white LEDs, broad-spectrum LEDs, or a mixture of several LED types. A channel is an independently controlled driven group, not a single colour.

Can one channel use white light while the other two use narrow wavelengths?

Yes, provided the driver, LED layout, channel power allocation and thermal design support it. A white-or-broad-spectrum channel alongside two narrow-wavelength channels is a common three-channel architecture.

Can different CH1, CH2 and CH3 ratios be programmed?

Depending on the control system selected, the three channels can be adjusted independently to produce different output ratios. Where the controller supports preset storage, those ratios can be recalled repeatedly, which is what makes a ratio-based spectrum comparable between runs.

Can the power allocated to CH1, CH2 and CH3 be customized?

Yes, within engineering limits. Channel power allocation can be defined against the target SPD and the fixture’s total wattage, but it must balance against the driver, the drive current, the number of LEDs on each channel and the thermal design. This is why channel power allocation is a design input rather than a post-purchase setting.

When does a project need exactly three independent spectrum channels?

When three spectral components must be changed independently, two channels are insufficient because two of those components would otherwise be locked into a single control output, and a fourth variable is not required. Three channels is the correct specification when the requirement is genuinely three variables — not a step on the way to four.

Which FY LIGHTING fixtures support a three-channel configuration?

Platforms documented as supporting two-, three- or four-channel adjustable spectrum include the RBH series, with additional three-channel-capable options across the commercial range including the TPB, RBD and RBE platforms. Because capability is configuration-dependent, the exact three-channel build — channel assignment, power split and driver arrangement — is confirmed for your fixture type, wattage and target spectrum.

Which controllers and interfaces can manage three channels?

Depending on the driver and control scheme, three-channel fixtures may be managed over PWM, 0–10V, DALI or other interfaces, including centralised control through a greenhouse climate computer or a dedicated lighting controller. Support varies by driver and fixture configuration and must be confirmed during engineering — three spectrum channels do not by themselves imply support for every control protocol.

Can one driver power multiple 3-channel grow light fixtures?

Where the product platform and electrical design support it, yes — FY LIGHTING documents one-driver-to-one-to-four-fixture configurations on the RBH platform. Multi-fixture-per-driver layouts must be confirmed against total power, drive current, wiring and control architecture, since channel count affects driver capacity.

Can FY LIGHTING develop a custom 3-channel grow light for an OEM project?

Yes. FY LIGHTING can develop a three-channel architecture against a target SPD, fixture structure, dimensions, wattage, control and mounting requirements, and supports OEM and ODM work including housing design, spectrum tuning, wattage adjustment, labeling and packaging. Development follows the same path as any custom project: target spectrum, channel definition, fixture and driver matching, then sample build and verification.
